British and French troops do battle in colonial America, with aid from various native American war parties. The British troops enlist the help of local colonial militia men, who are reluctant to leave their homes undefended. A budding romance between a British officer's daughter and an independent man who was reared as a Mohican complicates things for the British officer, as the adopted Mohican pursues his own agenda despite the wrath of different people on both sides of the conflict.
I found this movie exciting all the way, although it does have some glaring weaknesses but it still drags you in and makes you forget about some of its faults. I thought Day-Lewis&#39; character was the let down of the whole movie, just irritating he was, Stowe was solid without being brilliant, but the best performance goes to Wes Studi who played the fearsome Huron war captain.<br/><br/>I don&#39;t know if its in the league of Braveheart for most people, but in comparing the 2 movies i think that LOTM at times soared above the heights of Braveheart, whereas Braveheart has a well developed story and is really solid entertainment, Mohicans is much looser and gives the actors more room to move, i didn&#39;t really feel anything for Mel Gibson when he was put to death in braveheart, however the last 10 minutes of Mohicans was some of the most moving i&#39;ve ever seen. Its a no contest between Jodhi May&#39;s final scene and M.Gibson&#39;s death in Braveheart, whereas one was genuine the other was less convincing because it wasn&#39;t William Wallace suffering it was Mel Gibson. Most of the big name actors have this problem as well: they can&#39;t seem to &quot;become&quot; their character instead they bring their real life personality into the film. That is the difference between The Last of the Mohicans and Braveheart, and The Last of the Mohicans and The Patriot. I&#39;m not just picking on Mel Gibson here either, its across the board.<br/><br/>I love the way they bring everything together in Mohicans, the music, the scenery, this is what making movies is all about. I like it that there&#39;s no reason or apologizing for the murders of the soldiers and innocents alike (British, French, Huron, Mohican) its just how they lived in those times, death was on every side. The bad points in the movie is that there is little character development and some of the heroics of Day-Lewis are a bit hard to stomach, otherwise i thought it was a truly entertaining and different kind of movie to what we usually see in this genre nowdays.
This is one of those few movies I can watch over and over. Michael Mann outdid himself. Last of the Mohicans is so stunningly beautiful, so tragic, and so riveting. Vastly superior to The Patriot (sorry Mel). In fact, when I watched The Patriot, It just made me want to watch this even more. The soundtrack is incredible, make sure you watch it in surround sound.

The screenplay for this movie, written by American filmmakers Michael Mann (who also directed the movie) and Christopher Crowe, was adapted in part from The Last of the Mohicans: A Narrative of 1757 (1826), a novel by American author James Fenimore Cooper [1789-1851], as well as from a previous film adaptation, <a href="/title/tt0027869/">The Last of the Mohicans (1936)</a> (1936). Sedition basically means &quot;making trouble against the government.&quot; Sedition can range from simple incitement to rebel all the way to high treason. Magua explains to General Montcalm (<a href="/name/nm0161717/">Patrice Chéreau</a>) that his… village and lodges were burned. Magua&#39;s children were killed by the English. I was taken a slave by the Mohawk who fought for the Grey Hair. Magua&#39;s wife believed he was dead and became the wife of another man. Magua became blood brother to the Mohawk, to be free. But always in his heart, he is Huron. And his heart will be whole again on the day the Grey Hair and all his seed are dead. It&#39;s called a gunstock club.
